Two Cases of Retroperitoneal Teratoma

Abstract

|
Retroperitoneal teratoma is considered to be a fairly rare tumor. In 1949 Palumbo and associates
reported 58 cases of retroperitoneal teratoma. Since then Arnheim has reviewed 39 cases and Ra
iner has reviewed 29 cases. These reported cases suvstantiate thr perponderance of this tumor in
early life and the similarity of symptoms in each case. The most prominent symptoms were abdo
minal pain and distention but sometimes an abdominal mass was the only presenting complaint.
The treatment of retroperitoneal teratoma is surgical removal. The incision should always be
a transperitoneal approach. The incidence of malignancy was lee than 10 percent.
At Kwang ju Christian Hospital good results were obtained in the surgical removal of retroperi
toneal teratoma in 2 cases, a 21 years old male and a 4 years old female.
These two cases are reported and the literature is reviewed.
